Enclosures are designed, manufactured and tested to protect control equipment like controllers, panel meters, recorders and other devices.
An enclosure is rated to reflect the degree of protection provided. For example, protection from dust, rain, snow and ice or protection from exposure to saltwater or other chemicals or protection from impact as workers or equipment is used nearby.
Some enclosures are rated for extreme conditions like submersion or for hazardous areas where explosion proof ratings can be necessary to protect both equipment and personnel. Finally some enclosures protect sensitive equipment from extreme temperatures. These enclosures often include fans, or devices like vortex coolers or heaters, to protect the equipment enclosed from extreme heat or cold.
